Party Support by State (1960-2022)

This is the first blog I’ve posted in awhile, and I hope to get back to it more regularly.

Here is an interactive map of the US (see below) showing Party Support by state from 1960-2022. This uses the blue-purple-red spectrum with purple being a toss up support state.

My algorithm requires a party to claim 10 pts for full support with the following point system:

  • State support for their pary’s nominee for president & VP (2 pts)
  • State support for their party’s nominees for US Senate (2 pts)
  • State support for their pary’s nominees for US House of Representatives (Worth up to 5 pts, depending if all US Reps are supported, mostly supported, split support, mostly supported, or not supported at all)
  • State supports for their party’s nominee for Governor (worth 1 pt)

The following map was created for me by Joshua Sweetman. You can adjust the years on the graphic above (see the drop down menu after the year of the election). The darker the blue, the more Democratic Party support in the state; the darker the red, the more Republican Party support in the state. Purple is mix.:
